Here’s something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:
1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds […]

These tweaks should work with all flavours of Linux. I have only tried them on Ubuntu so if you port them to other flavours, do so with CAUTION! These have been compiled from a million different sources so I don’t know who to credit with them, if you do, pat them on the back […]

Just found a brilliant tool for all those codecs that Ubuntu doesnt come with. Install this application and then find the Gstreamer codecs… it’s a lot easier than other methods of making Ubuntu a happy music-muncher. Here’s how to install it:
From terminal do the following (ONE LINE AT A TIME HITTING ENTER AFTER EACH STEP):

I was just browsing when I stumbled across this forum message. I think this guy has a good idea and someone should do something about it. Especially if it can be done freely!

My Ubuntu installation just updated aMSN for me, which was nice. However when trying to sign into my account it says that TSL is not present on my system and offers to install it for you. However this then failed saying it couldn’t find the package at sourceforge. Luckily I found a fix for this […]

I was browsing around the Ubuntu forums when I came across this little ‘howto’. Basically you can set a terminal window as your desktop background in gnome… now if that isnt geek sheek I have no idea what is! I have edited it slightly so its a little easier to understand for my fellow ‘noobs’.

Desktop effects software Compiz and Beryl have recently emerged to give us fantastic looking desktops with graphical effects. Recently they merged together to become Compiz Fusion which will be released in the upcoming Ubuntu 7.10 ‘Gutsy Gibbon’. I got fed up with the basic desktop effects that were supplied with ‘Feisty Fawn’ and decided to […]

I was surprised to find Mozilla Thunderbird 2 was not in the standard Ubuntu 7.04 repository, so I found this little snippet to solve the problem. It may be a good idea to back up your emails if you use an earlier version of Thunderbird as your email client.
Get the repository key:
wget http://ubuntu.iuculano.it/AE3BE9AA.gpg -O- | […]
